Every day in Los Angeles County, thousands of tons of edible food are discarded while nearly one in four households experiences food insecurity. The challenge isn’t a lack of food—it’s connecting surplus food with the people who need it most.
For more than 20 years, FoodCycle has been building those connections.
Working alongside businesses, volunteers, nonprofits, and local governments, FoodCycle has rescued more than 33 million pounds of food, helping provide millions of meals while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening communities throughout Los Angeles County.
Today, FoodCycle partners with hundreds of food donors and a network of more than 300 nonprofit community organizations that distribute food directly to families, seniors, veterans, students, and individuals experiencing homelessness.
More Than Food Recovery
FoodCycle is creating a more efficient and equitable food system by helping businesses:
-
Comply with California’s SB 1383 edible food recovery requirements
-
Track donations and environmental impact through Careit technology
-
Reduce costs of waste hauling and turn surplus into tax benefits
-
Reduce food waste and disposal costs
-
Support local communities with fresh, nutritious food
-
Engage employees in meaningful volunteer experiences
Every pound of food recovered creates benefits for people, businesses, and the planet.
Corporate Volunteerism: Turning Purpose into Action
One of the most powerful ways companies engage with FoodCycle is through volunteer service.
Corporate teams can participate in food sorting events, food distributions, warehouse projects, and community food recovery activities that provide a firsthand look at both the challenges and solutions surrounding food insecurity and food waste.
These experiences strengthen employee engagement, support team building, and create meaningful opportunities for staff to make a tangible impact in their communities.
Many of FoodCycle’s strongest corporate partnerships began with a volunteer day. Volunteering helps build team engagement and promote participation in food recovery programs.
When employees see the scale of food waste and the difference food recovery can make, they become advocates for change within their organizations and communities.
